XI International Course: Italian-Brazilian Meeting "Face & Body"

The greatest Brazilian plastic surgeons have chosen Naples. From May 16-18, 2013, at the Federico II University Conference Center, the XI International Plastic Surgery Course is held: the first Italian-Brazilian meeting "Face & Body". Three days of exchange between the Italian school and the one that, since the 1960s when pioneer Ivo Pitanguy started, is considered a world reference.

Dr. Borriello: "This is the first time so many Brazilian surgeons are all present together at an Italian course - this confirms the importance of our Naples event and I thank prestigious names like Baroudi, famous for abdominoplasty, Gonzalez, great specialist in gluteoplasty, Aboudib, president of the Brazilian Society of Surgery, for joining."

Organization

The course is organized by Dr. Alfredo Borriello, head of the Plastic Surgery department at Vecchio Pellegrini Hospital and director of the Naples course, together with Brazilian master Osvaldo Saldanha and with Francesco D'Andrea as president.

The "Jolie Case"

What better occasion than the international plastic surgery congress taking place in Naples to analyze the controversy generated by the preventive double mastectomy that Angelina Jolie underwent? The American actress's drastic decision was discussed at length at the first Italian-Brazilian meeting "Face & Body".

"Procedures like the one chosen by Angelina Jolie that the whole world is talking about have been performed by us for years: in these cases plastic and reconstructive surgery can help women who want a good aesthetic result. However, it is always important to evaluate with the doctor when and if to operate on a breast not yet affected by cancer even if the patient reports risk factors."

With preventive mastectomy - which is beginning to spread among women following new genetic tests - the risk of developing cancer drops dramatically, from 87% to 5%.

Innovations Presented

Micropolyurethane Breast Implants

Among the innovations presented in the three days at the Federico II Conference Center, micropolyurethane breast implants, now considered the most indicated for reconstruction and implant replacements. Special silicone devices are used instead to fight scars and keloids.

Lipoabdominoplasty (Saldanha Technique)

Also present at the congress was Dr. Saldanha, inventor, among other things, of Lipoabdominoplasty (Brazilian technique or Saldanha technique) which consists of abdominal liposuction performed with a particular technique.

"Combining lipo with abdominoplasty gives extraordinary results - said Borriello - this operation is especially indicated after significant weight loss, in severely obese patients and in at-risk subjects precisely because it simplifies the procedure."

For some years the technique has been adopted with excellent results also by some European specialists.

Mid-face lift

Among the innovations anticipated by Dr. Borriello: the mid-face lift, or lifting of the middle third of the face with cheekbone elevation.

"Open" Technique for Rhinoplasty

For nose surgery, space for the open technique that ensures a natural, as if remodeled, nose. The last day of the course was dedicated to the eye area and upper face: blepharoplasty, periorbital rejuvenation and brow lift.

Liquid Lift and Hydro-Lift

"The current trend is the so-called liquid lift or hydro-lift - explains Borriello - achieved with hyaluronic acid injections that, by hydrating, lift facial volumes with a natural effect lasting one year."

Hyaluronic acid, in the form of filler or biostimulation, is infiltrated into subdermal tissue or along the entire course of the wrinkle or fold, thus causing filling and relaxation in an area that has lost elasticity and tone, reshaping hollow cheeks, nasolabial folds and cheekbones.

Suspension Threads

In spring you can schedule a blepharoplasty to rejuvenate your gaze, a nose correction, and a mini lift, with the application of Suspension Threads.

"It's a new minimally invasive surgical method, performed under local anesthesia. Under the facial skin, a special thread pulls and lifts the subcutaneous tissues interspersed with tiny cones that act as anchors. The procedure is performed under local anesthesia. The threads are inserted through a small incision in the temporal area. In short, goodbye to invasive procedures and long recovery: surgery becomes light, both in methods and, as much as possible, in costs."

Italy-Brazil Differences

From the meeting it emerged, for example, that Brazilian women prefer to correct more of the body, with great attention to buttocks and abdomen. Italian women, on the other hand, want to fight the first signs of skin aging and are more interested in facial and especially nasal plastic surgery: trends that, experts explain, reflect different ideas of beauty and lifestyles.

  • Brazilian women: more attention to buttocks and abdomen, body correction
  • Italian women: more interested in face and nose, fighting the first signs of aging

Over 20 International Speakers

Over twenty Brazilian specialists attended the international meeting. Illustrious names in the field of plastic surgery.

  • Brazil: Neto, Pita, Ribeiro, Graf, Gonsalez, Saldanha, Baroudi, Aboudib
  • Italy: D'Andrea, D'Alessio, Gasparotti, Berrino, Buschi, Fasano, Paci and many others

Spring, time for "liquid lift", "micro-lipofilling", vitamins, biorevitalization and radiofrequency. It's precisely the season of nature's awakening, and also of the body, when the need to improve and rejuvenate one's appearance grows.

  • Botulinum: for forehead wrinkles, glabellar wrinkles (nose root) and "crow's feet"
  • Microlipolifting: fat taken from the patient's abdomen to reshape cheekbones and jaw contour
  • Biorevitalization: with vitamins, hyaluronic acid, silicon and PRP (platelet growth factor)
  • Radiofrequency: preferably the new multiphase type and also mild pulsed light

Spring warning: not recommended to use laser for wrinkles and rosacea (can induce sensitization) and light peels with low-dose mandelic and glycolic acid because skin spots can worsen.
