It's called Post-Obesity Reconstruction. It's a surgical procedure performed after gastric restriction or bypass surgery. When the patient has already lost about fifty kilos.
Since obesity is increasing and the "heavy" people who turn to surgeons to lose weight are increasing, the list of those who want to go back on the operating table to remove excess tissue is getting longer and longer. So much so that you have to wait six to nine months to be operated on at Vecchio Pellegrini, at the Plastic Surgery Operating Unit, directed by Dr. Alfredo Borriello.
Dr. Borriello: "After the first procedure and subsequent weight loss, the patient finds themselves with unsightly excess tissue, which can be removed in a public facility covered by the national health service. Of course, if they can demonstrate having undergone a previous bypass or gastric restriction procedure."
When you lose fifty, sixty and sometimes even seventy kilos, the biggest problem is tissue laxity that localizes in various body areas:
This redundant skin, besides being unsightly, causes biological problems. Secretions accumulate, often generating infections.
"This is why the former obese patient requests post-bariatric body reshaping that allows reshaping of thighs, legs, abdomen thus completing the transformation process of an obese patient."
Dr. Borriello recently returned from Brazil, the only Italian speaker at the international congress attended by the biggest names in world plastic surgery.
"In Italy too, as in the United States, the number of obese people is increasingly growing. And there are so many who turn to surgeons to lose weight. Obviously the secondary procedure is also increasing. So much so that, in our facility, one of the few in Campania that performs this type of procedure, waiting lists range from six to nine months."
Dr. Borriello points out that these are long and complex operations, which often present residual comorbidity problems:
"In short, many precautions are needed. In conclusion, these are complex situations."
The procedure is free if performed in a public facility covered by the National Health Service, provided the patient can demonstrate having undergone a previous bypass or gastric restriction procedure.
